Follow these instructions carefully before applying your DTF District transfers.
Recommended Heat Press Settings
- Temperature: 320°F (160°C)
- Pressing time: 15 seconds
- Pressure: Very firm
- Peel: Warm or completely cool
- Finishing press: 5 seconds
These settings are recommended as a starting point. Heat presses and garment materials may perform differently, so test a transfer when possible before completing a large order.
What You’ll Need
Before beginning, make sure you have:
- A heat press machine
- Your DTF transfer
- A compatible garment
- A lint roller
- Parchment paper or a Teflon sheet
- Heat-resistant tape, if needed
- Heat-resistant gloves, if desired
A clamshell or swing-away heat press is recommended. A household iron may not provide the consistent temperature and pressure needed for reliable adhesion.
Step 1: Prepare the Garment
Place the garment flat on the heat press. Make sure the pressing area is clean, dry, and free from seams, buttons, zippers, pockets, or other objects that may prevent even pressure.
Use a lint roller to remove dust, lint, hair, and loose fibers from the application area.
Step 2: Preheat the Garment
Preheat the garment for 5 seconds at 320°F (160°C).
Preheating helps:
- Remove excess moisture
- Smooth wrinkles
- Flatten fabric fibers
- Create a better surface for adhesion
Moisture trapped in the fabric can interfere with the transfer’s bond.
Step 3: Position the DTF Transfer
Place the transfer with the printed adhesive side against the garment and the clear carrier film facing upward.
Center and align the design carefully before pressing. Use heat-resistant tape when needed to keep the transfer from moving.
Make sure the transfer is flat and free from folds or wrinkles.
Step 4: Press the Transfer
Close the heat press and press the transfer using:
- 320°F (160°C)
- 15 seconds
- Very firm pressure
Apply consistent pressure for the full pressing time. Opening the press too early or using insufficient pressure may cause poor adhesion, lifting, or peeling.
Step 5: Allow the Transfer to Cool
Remove the garment from the press and place it on a clean, flat surface.
Allow the transfer to cool until it is warm to the touch or completely cool. Avoid peeling the film immediately while it is extremely hot.
Cooling gives the adhesive time to bond properly with the garment.
Step 6: Peel the Carrier Film
Beginning at one corner, slowly and carefully peel the carrier film away from the garment.
Watch the design as you peel. If any part of the transfer begins lifting from the fabric:
- Stop peeling.
- Lay the film back into position.
- Press the area again for several seconds.
- Allow it to cool before peeling again.
Do not pull the film away quickly or forcefully.
Step 7: Complete the Finishing Press
After removing the carrier film, cover the design with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet.
Press the design again for 5 seconds at 320°F (160°C) using firm pressure.
The finishing press helps improve:
- Adhesion
- Wash resistance
- Surface texture
- Overall durability
- Professional appearance
Do not skip this step.
Garment Care Instructions
Wait at least 24 hours before washing the decorated garment.
For longer-lasting results:
- Turn the garment inside out before washing.
- Wash in cold water.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
- Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry.
- Do not dry-clean.
- Do not iron directly over the design.
- Avoid excessive washing and drying temperatures.
Proper garment care helps protect the transfer’s color, flexibility, and adhesion.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
The Design Is Peeling
The press may not have provided enough pressure, heat, or pressing time. Replace the carrier film or cover the design with parchment paper and press it again using firm, consistent pressure.
Parts of the Design Remain on the Film
Stop peeling and place the film back over the design. Press it again for several seconds, allow it to cool, and peel slowly.
The Edges Are Lifting
Complete another finishing press using parchment paper and firm pressure. Make sure the entire design receives even heat and pressure.
The Colors Look Dull
Confirm that the press reached the correct temperature and that the garment was preheated. Fabric type, material color, coatings, and screen settings may also affect how colors appear.
The Transfer Has Uneven Adhesion
Seams, collars, pockets, buttons, zippers, or uneven press pressure may prevent proper application. Use a pressing pillow or reposition the garment to create a flat pressing area.
Important Application Notice
Heat presses, fabrics, garment dyes, and coatings may react differently. Always test a spare garment or transfer before beginning a large production order.
